This week I had my first trip into a beehive courtesy of my friend Lanette and her wonderful neighbor Lisa, who house their hives together. They were generous enough to show me their hives for their first inspection this year.

I have had a fear of bees all my life. When I was 6 years old a swarm of ground wasps erupted from a hive after my dad ran them over with a lawnmower. I was following behind him with my toy mower and was quickly attacked with over 20 stings all over my body. Taking these beekeeper classes has been a lesson in getting over my fear and lets say getting into the hive was my final exam. Can I really do this?

The happy beekeeper 🙂
My great teachers were so calm and experienced that I felt very at ease, even when at one point the bees became a bit agitated. I think this visit was the final decision as to whether I could be a beekeeper and the answer is yes! My equipment is being ordered and my hive will be soon. My family is even excited! I’m sure my plants will appreciate it too.

❤ those bees!
