Blueberry Muffins & Heritage

I have blueberries in my veins or so I’ve been told. My dad’s family is from Maine, specifically Cutler & Machias; beautiful cold upper coastal Maine. Long ago our family had acres of sweet blueberry bushes (the “real” kind I call them…low, not high bushes, with amazingly sweet berries that only come with frigid winters).

The land was sold long ago and now belongs to the state. Here in Hampton Roads our season is ending but in Cutler there is a huge blueberry festival every August.

Here is a blueberry muffin recipe that anyone can make with fresh or frozen berries and what you have in your pantry:

Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter, room temp 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 2 cups flour 1/2 cup milk 2 1/2 cups fresh or frozen berries

Topping 1tbsp sugar 1/4 tsp nutmeg

1. Preheat oven to 375. Grease muffin tin. Beat butter in mixer until creamy. 2. Add sugar. Beat until fluffy

3. Add eggs. Beat until mixed well. 4. Add vanilla, baking powder, & salt. 5. Fold in 1/2 flour. Then fold in 1/2 milk. Repeat (trying to keep this mix light…don’t stir it to death!)

6. Fold in beautiful blueberries.

7. Put in muffin tin…heaping spoonfuls. Make a mess. Put mixed topping over each.

8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and springy.

9. Have a nice cup of tea on a rainy day with some warm muffins. Reminiscing about picking berries in coastal Maine when I was little. Have a great day everyone!
